AI Overviews now appear on about 88% of tracked commercial keywords, so SaaS comparison, pricing and review pages must be written to be cited, not just ranked. A Semrush study of 400 keywords found coverage rising from 45.75% in September 2025 to 88% in August 2026. Update these pages for accuracy, structure and fresh evidence.

Cekpr covers SEO and AI search for B2B software teams. This guide is for content leads and founders who own the pages that buyers read when they compare tools. It walks through what the study found, then a page-by-page update plan that does not depend on guesswork.

What did the Semrush study find?

Semrush's Luke Harsel published the work on October 21, 2026. The Semrush commercial modifiers study tracked 400 commercial keywords across banking, software and ecommerce. It used U.S. desktop data from September 2025 to August 2026.

The keywords sat in five modifier groups: alternatives, brand versus brand, best X for Y, pricing or cost, and reviews. Overall coverage climbed from 45.75% to 88%. Weighted by search volume, it reached 97.08%, since the keywords without an overview made up under 3% of volume.

Software started highest among the three industries at 68% in September 2025. By August 2026, banking, software and ecommerce all sat between 85% and 91%. Two software combinations hit 100%: alternatives and best X for Y.

What are the limits of the study?

Three, and they matter. It uses a fixed panel of 400 keywords, so it is a sample and not the whole web. It covers U.S. desktop only, and mobile results may differ. And the headline 88% weights every keyword equally, while the 97.08% figure weights by volume.

Cekpr editors read the volume-weighted figure as the practical one. If nearly all search volume on commercial terms has an overview above the results, planning around one is safer than planning around its absence.

Do you need special markup to appear?

No. Google's AI features documentation says a page can appear as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. It states there are no additional requirements. It also says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data.

That is useful context. Many teams are tempted to chase tricks. Google's own guidance points back to fundamentals: allow crawling, use internal links, keep important content in text and keep structured data consistent with what is visible.

How should you rework an alternatives page?

Start with the reader's decision. Someone searching "alternatives to [competitor]" wants a shortlist with honest tradeoffs. A thin page that lists your product first and calls it best gives a summarizer little to cite.

Build the page around verifiable facts. Name the competitor and state what it does well. List pricing tiers with a date, the integrations that matter and the limits that make people leave. Then state who your product suits and who it does not.

  1. Open with a two-sentence answer naming three or four options and who each fits.
  2. Add a comparison table with the same rows for every product.
  3. Date every price and every feature claim.
  4. Link to the vendors' own pricing and documentation pages.
  5. End with a plain recommendation by buyer type.

How should you structure versus pages?

Brand versus brand pages gained the least in the study, since they already had high coverage. They remain a core buying page. Structure them so one answer is easy to extract.

Use one H2 per decision factor, such as pricing, setup time, integrations and support. Put a short direct answer at the top of each section, then the evidence below it. A summarizer can lift the answer, and a human reader can check the proof.

Avoid vague superiority claims. Replace "faster and easier" with a measured fact, such as "setup takes about two hours for a team of ten in our test." If you have no test, say what you did check and what you did not.

What should a pricing page include?

Pricing and cost modifiers had the lowest software coverage in some combinations, but they reached high levels overall. A pricing page should show every plan, its monthly and annual price, its limits and its add-ons. Hide nothing behind a form if the number exists.

Add a short section that explains how the price scales. For example, show what a team of 5, 25 and 100 users pays. A reader and an answer engine both prefer a worked example over a "contact sales" button.

Keep the page current. Review pricing pages on a set cadence, as our guide on running a content review for a SaaS blog on a quarterly and annual schedule lays out. A stale price in an AI answer is a trust problem you did not cause but will inherit.

How do you handle review content?

Reviews grew the fastest, so this is where the gap is widest. Semrush notes that review-style queries now pull sources such as review sites, roundups, videos and forums. Your own site is one source among many.

Two actions follow. First, make your own review and case study pages specific and sourced. Second, earn reviews on the third-party platforms that get cited, where those platforms allow you to ask.

Be careful with rules. Fake or incentivized reviews can create legal problems. Our piece on the FTC review rule and SaaS testimonials explains what to fix on testimonial and review pages.

What does a citation card show about your page?

Google may be changing what the citation cards say. Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 23, 2026 that Google appears to be testing AI-written summaries in citation cards. Brodie Clark spotted it, and Barry Schwartz saw it for some of his test queries but not all.

The summary text does not match the source page word for word. It is condensed around what Google thinks is relevant to the query. For a SaaS team, that means the card's description of your pricing or features may not mirror your page copy.

The fix is not to chase wording. It is to make the key facts unmistakable on the page. State the plan name, the price and the limit in plain sentences near the top, so any summary built from them stays correct.

How do you measure the effect?

Do not rely on rankings alone. Semrush recommends tracking AI Overview mentions, citations and sentiment next to traditional positions. It also suggests finding which sources the overviews cite for your target queries.

Google says clicks from these features appear in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, so you will not see a separate line. Use a fixed list of 20 to 30 target queries and check them by hand each month. Record whether an overview appears, who is cited and whether your page is among them.

If you want the bigger picture, our look at where AI answers get their sources for B2B software shows how little of the citation share goes to a brand's own site.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Three come up often. The first is rewriting every page at once. Start with the five that drive revenue and watch the effect before you scale the change.

The second is attacking competitors with claims you cannot support. A summarizer may repeat a harsh statement, and your name will sit next to it. Stick to facts you can source and date.

The third is ignoring the pages that already work. If a comparison page earns links and demos today, protect its structure while you improve its accuracy. A careful edit beats a full rewrite, and it keeps the signals those pages have earned over the years, such as links, history and a stable URL.

What is the next step for a SaaS team?

Pick your five highest-value commercial pages and audit them this week. Check every price, feature claim and screenshot against the live product. Fix anything stale, add a dated comparison table and write a direct answer at the top.

Then set a monthly check of your target queries. The pages that earn citations are the ones that stay accurate, and accuracy is a process. Cekpr will keep covering how AI search changes the pages that sell software, including the tests and studies that tell us what actually moves citations and clicks.

How common are AI Overviews on commercial keywords?
A Semrush study of 400 commercial keywords found AI Overviews on 88% of them by August 2026, up from 45.75% in September 2025. Weighted by search volume, coverage reached 97.08%, because the keywords without an overview carried under 3% of search volume. The data is U.S. desktop only.
Which modifiers saw the biggest jump?
Reviews grew the most, rising from 30.14% to nearly 90%, a gain of 59 points. Best X for Y queries reached the highest coverage at 96.12%. Alternatives pages rose 34 points and now sit above 82%, while brand versus brand queries gained the least but still passed 86%.
Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google's documentation says a page needs only to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that no extra files, markup or special structured data are required. Standard SEO fundamentals apply, including crawlable text, internal links and a good page experience.
Can I see AI Overview clicks in Search Console?
Google says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode appear in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Impressions and clicks are blended with classic results, so you cannot filter them out cleanly. Pair Search Console with analytics and manual checks of your target queries.
