Google's AI Mode inline links update, announced October 15, 2026, places source links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews responses more often. It also tests a top section for the one or two official pages for a task. For B2B SaaS sites, the practical move is to make task pages unmistakable and measure AI referrals separately.

One percent. That was the share of visits where users clicked a link inside a Google AI summary in a 2025 study by the Pew Research Center. Any change that moves those links higher deserves attention, and that is what Google announced in a post titled "More ways to connect with the web from Search".

This explainer is for B2B SaaS marketers and founders who handle their own SEO. It covers what changed, what Google did not say, and which pages on a SaaS site are most affected. It ends with a short list of fixes worth doing this month and one tactic to ignore.

What Google Changed in AI Mode and AI Overviews

The October 15 post, written by Hema Budaraju, Google's vice president of product management, lists five changes. Two of them matter most to software companies. The other three affect news publishers and video creators more than SaaS vendors.

Here is the full list, in the order Google gave it:

  1. More inline links, placed higher. Google says it made "continued and substantial increases" to inline links and is moving them up in responses.
  2. A test section for official pages. Some answers show the one or two official pages for a task at the top, with a note on why each is useful.
  3. Wider news carousels. These highlight a user's Preferred Sources, a feature Google says has grown more than 7x since January.
  4. Thumbnails on related links. Links at the end of some answers get images and a more clickable design.
  5. Clickable creator names. A test in AI Mode links video creators to their Search profiles.

The first two build on a May 6, 2026 batch of link changes. This is a steady direction, not a one-off.

Placement matters because almost nobody clicks a link buried at the bottom of an AI answer. The Pew Research Center analysis tracked 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Links inside the summary got clicks on just 1% of visits.

Moving a link from the end of a response to the second sentence changes who sees it. Google has not said by how much. That gap is the main thing to keep in mind when you read vendor claims over the next few weeks.

At Cekpr, our rule of thumb is simple: no number, no tactic. We keep a list of AI search claims and the date each one was disproven, and "this update will double your AI traffic" is already on it twice this year.

The audience using these answers is large and growing. A Federal Reserve FEDS Note on AI adoption, published April 3, 2026, put work-related generative AI use at about 41% of the U.S. workforce as of November 2025. It found the highest use in financial services, at 63%, and professional services, at 62%. Those are the buyers many B2B SaaS companies sell to.

Which SaaS Pages Count as Official Pages in AI Mode?

Google has not published criteria for its official pages test. Its post describes queries where there are "only one or two official places on the web to complete a specific task." For a SaaS company, that most likely means login, signup, pricing, documentation, status and support pages. These are the pages to tighten first.

The test expands an existing habit. Google already shows a site's link prominently when someone is clearly looking for that site. The new part is the note explaining why each link is useful. That note has to come from somewhere, and plain text on the page is the obvious source.

Several page traits probably help Google pick the right official page. None are confirmed by Google, so treat this list as hygiene rather than a ranking formula:

  • One clear page per task, not three near-duplicates for "pricing."
  • A title and H1 that name the task, such as "Log in to Acme."
  • Key facts, like plan names and prices, in HTML text rather than images.
  • Pages that are indexable and not blocked for Google's crawlers.

The last point trips up more SaaS sites than you would expect. App subdomains and docs portals are often set to noindex or blocked in robots.txt by default. Our robots.txt setup guide for AI crawlers covers how to keep those pages reachable without opening your app.

A Quick Audit of Your Official SaaS Task Pages

A short audit of five page types covers most of the exposure. The table below lists each page, the task a searcher is trying to finish and the first thing to check.

A Quick Audit of Your Official SaaS Task Pages
Page typeSearcher's taskFirst thing to check
LoginGet into the appOne indexable login URL, named in the title
PricingCompare plans and costsPrices in HTML text, not inside images
Signup or free trialStart using the productNo duplicate trial pages competing for the query
DocumentationSolve a setup problemDocs subdomain is crawlable and not set to noindex
Support or statusReport or check an issueClear contact options and a live status link

Most teams can finish this in an hour. The fixes are usually small, such as merging two pricing pages or moving plan prices out of a graphic.

News Carousels and Preferred Sources for B2B Brands

The news carousel change is aimed at publishers, but it touches SaaS companies with active blogs. Preferred Sources lets users choose outlets they want to see more of in Top Stories and AI answers. Google says use of the feature grew more than 7x since the start of 2026, without giving a baseline.

A vendor blog is unlikely to become a mass Preferred Source. A respected industry newsletter or research hub might. If your company publishes original data, such as a yearly benchmark report, it is worth asking loyal readers to add you. That is a small ask with a real, if modest, upside.

The bigger lesson is about who gets cited. In our analysis of where AI answers get their sources for B2B software, only about 10% of citations pointed to the vendor's own site. Higher inline links help the sources already being cited. They do not change who those sources are.

A bundle of newspapers tied with jute rope

The announcement leaves out three things a data-minded team would want. Google gave no click-through rates for the new placements. It gave no rollout timeline for the official pages test. It also published no eligibility rules for that section.

That matters for how you report results. If AI Mode referrals rise next month, the cause could be this update, a seasonal shift or a change in your own content. Without a baseline, you cannot tell them apart. The U.S. Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey is a useful reminder of how uneven adoption is. It found 17% to 20% of U.S. businesses used AI between December 2025 and May 2026, rising to 37% among firms with 250 or more employees. The information sector led all industries at 39.7% as of May 3, 2026.

That spread suggests enterprise and small-business buyers may see AI answers at very different rates. If you sell to both, segment your data the same way.

Start measuring before you change anything. Three numbers give you a fair before-and-after view:

  1. Search Console impressions and clicks for your official task pages, compared week over week from October 15.
  2. Referral sessions from AI surfaces in your analytics, split out from organic search where your setup allows.
  3. Branded query share, since official page placement mostly affects people already looking for you.

Our guide to measuring AI search visibility in Search Console walks through the setup for the first two. Give it four weeks before drawing conclusions. One week of data on a partial test rollout tells you very little.

One tactic to skip: any "AI Mode optimization" package that promises inline links. Google has published no eligibility rules, so nobody can guarantee placement. The same caution applies to quick fixes like new files for AI crawlers. Before adding one, read what Google actually says, which our explainer on whether a SaaS site needs llms.txt covers.

The Recommendation

The AI Mode inline links update is good news in principle and unproven in practice. Fix the basics on your official task pages, put key facts in plain text near the top, and measure AI referrals on their own line. Do not pay for a tactic that promises to win inline links.

Cekpr covers how B2B software companies get found in search and AI answers. We will update this piece when Google shares click data or expands the official pages test.

What did Google change in AI Mode on October 15, 2026?
Google said it made substantial increases to inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews and now shows them higher in responses more often. It also began testing a top section for the one or two official pages for a task, added thumbnails to related links, and expanded news carousels.
Will the AI Mode inline links update bring more traffic to my SaaS site?
Nobody knows yet, and Google published no click data with the announcement. A Pew Research Center study from 2025 found users clicked a link inside an AI summary on just 1% of visits. Higher placement should help, but measure your own referrals before assuming a lift.
How does Google decide which page is the official page for a task?
Google has not published criteria. Its post describes queries where there are only one or two official places on the web to complete a specific task. For a SaaS company, that likely means pages such as login, pricing, signup, documentation and support. Make those pages clear and easy to crawl.
Should B2B SaaS companies change their content because of this update?
Not dramatically. The update rewards pages that answer a specific question and are clearly the right destination. Tighten your official task pages, make sure key facts sit in plain text near the top, and track AI Mode referrals separately. Avoid any tactic sold as a guaranteed way to win inline links.
